Meet the Musicians – Rob Shirley

Rob Shirley began playing French horn at school in his hometown of Bendigo. Rob was successful at local and national competitions and performed as soloist with the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra before commencing a Bachelor of Music under Geoff Collinson at the University of Melbourne.

Upon completion of this degree, Rob travelled to Hamburg, Germany, where he continued his studies under Prof. Ab Koster and worked as a freelance musician throughout northern Germany, performing professional opera, ballet, musical theatre and symphonic repertoire.

Upon returning to Australia in 2010 he has toured the country several times, with Opera Australia’s Oz Opera and also as a member of Josh Groban’s orchestra on his 2013 ‘All that Echoes’ tour.

Rob is currently completing Master’s degree in Orchestral Studies at Monash University, studying with Saul Lewis, and playing regularly with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria.

Steven Hodgson joined The Consort of Melbourne as Assistant Director in 2014 under the mentorship of Warren Trevelyan-Jones and Peter Tregear and was appointed Artistic Director of the group in 2016.

He completed a Bachelor of Music with Honours at the University of Melbourne in 2004, studying composition with Stuart Greenbaum, Brenton Broadstock and Brett Dean and voice with Stephen Grant. Most recently, he completed the Kurt Thomas Cursus at the HKU Utrecht Conservatory, specialising in chamber choir repertoire.

A committed vocalist, choral conductor and composer, Steven performs regularly as a soloist and ensemble member with the Astra Choir, e21 and the Australian Chamber Choir. He is also the Head of Publishing for the Australian Music  Examinations Board.

AllisonAllison Wright grew up in Eltham, Victoria and began playing trumpet at age 10. At 19, Allison was accepted into the Professional Performance Program at the Australian National Academy of Music under the combined tutelage of Tristram Williams; world renowned contemporary soloist and David Elton; principal trumpet of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Allison regularly performs in chamber settings as well as a soloist.

In September 2013, Allison was one of 8 Australians selected to compete in the Aeolus International Competition for Winds in Dusseldorf, Germany. Allison is a casual musician with Orchestra Victoria and has performed with the Australian Youth Orchestra and alongside Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra musicians in various initiatives.

In 2014 and 2015, Allison is a recipient of the The Standish Robert Trumpet Scholarship and a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra. As well as classical trumpet, Allison has a passion for sound design and music production.

Paul Zabrowarny is a Melbourne-based cellist with a strong interest in contemporary repertoire. After completing his Bachelor of Music at the Elder Conservatorium under the guidance of Janis Laurs, Paul studied for four years at the Australian National Academy of Music.

Paul has performed recitals throughout Australia and Europe and has appeared frequently as a soloist with orchestras. He is also a keen chamber musician.

Paul has performed in concerts that have been broadcast on radio and television, including solo performances on ABC Classic FM, Radio Suisse Romande and local radio in Adelaide and Melbourne.

In 2007, Paul received grants from the Ian Potter Foundation and the Australia Council to undertake a Masters of Music Performance at the Conservatoire de Lausanne, Switzerland – in the class of Patrick Demenga.

This study included a focus on performing contemporary music and exploring a variety of extended cello techniques.

Paul has worked with many of the major Australian orchestras and performs regularly with Orchestra Victoria. Paul was an Emerging Artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and has continued to perform with the ACO2.

Louisa Trewartha is a Melbourne based musician. She completed a BMus in 2010 from the University of Melbourne, and in 2013 studied at the Australian National Academy of Music, mentored by trumpet pedagogues David Elton and Tristram Williams. Having completed an MA in Scoring for Film and Visual Media in 2016 at Pulse College, Dublin, Louisa now splits her time as a trumpet player, teacher, and composer.

As a trumpet player Louisa has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, and in 2017 played in the Melbourne season of My Fair Lady. As an educator Louisa has tutored for Orchestra Victoria’s mOVe program, AYO Young Symphonists program, MYO Summer School, and is the current brass teacher at Sacré Cœur.

In 2017, Louisa participated in the Australian Composers School with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra tutored by Jessica Wells, Maria Grenfell, and Paul Stanhope. Louisa’s 2018 works include; Flight, commissioned for the brass band of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama; The Nature of Sound, a massed item commissioned by the Regional Centre for Culture for thirty pipes & drums, and eighty brass & percussion; Drone Swarm written for Elliott Hughes for trumpet & electronics; and The Bendigo Boom, a miniature musical celebrating 30 years of the Bendigo Instrumental Music Program. In October 2018, Louisa recorded her Flugelhorn Concerto and Trumpet Concerto, with both orchestral and piano accompaniment. This digital album is due for release in February 2019.

We’re so excited to be back at the always amazing La Mama Courthouse, and back in the loving arms of the La Mama Theatre and the Midsumma Festival. 

Featuring music by:   Benjamin Britten, John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, Naima Fine, Jennifer Higdon, and a few surprises…

Hello! Sadly, 3 shades black is not doing a fringe show this year, but 3 shades black director Miranda Hill, and regular collaborator Leah Scholes have teamed up to start something silly with “Cakebombing!”
