Rob Shirley began playing French horn at school in his hometown of Bendigo. Rob was successful at local and national competitions and performed as soloist with the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra before commencing a Bachelor of Music under Geoff Collinson at the University of Melbourne.
Upon completion of this degree, Rob travelled to Hamburg, Germany, where he continued his studies under Prof. Ab Koster and worked as a freelance musician throughout northern Germany, performing professional opera, ballet, musical theatre and symphonic repertoire.
Upon returning to Australia in 2010 he has toured the country several times, with Opera Australia’s Oz Opera and also as a member of Josh Groban’s orchestra on his 2013 ‘All that Echoes’ tour.
Rob is currently completing Master’s degree in Orchestral Studies at Monash University, studying with Saul Lewis, and playing regularly with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria.
