Luke Paulding

Luke Paulding

Born in the Middle East and raised in Melbourne, Luke Paulding is swiftly emerging as a prominent voice in Australia’s younger generation of composers.

Luke’s music has been performed and recorded throughout the UK, Ireland, France, the Middle East, Singapore and across much of Australia, by leading musicians and ensembles such as the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, ELISION Ensemble, Speak Percussion, Namascae Lemanic Modern Ensemble (France/Switzerland), ensemble interface(Germany), Aria Co., Quiver and Kupka’s Piano. He has received commissions from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, ELISION Ensemble, Speak, Chamber Made Opera, the Australian National Academy of Music, the Victorian College of the Arts, the Musical Society of Victoria, and his music has featured at the Edinburgh Festival, Melbourne International Arts Festival, Melbourne Fringe, Metropolis Festival, Totally Huge New Music Festival and Castlemaine Festival. Also a trained pianist and tubist, Luke is a founding member and co-director of new music ensemble, Quiver, dedicated to innovative performances of contemporary art music.

In addition to composing concert music, Luke is passionate about collaborations with other artists and organisations on theatre, film, mixed-media and experimental art projects, such as the Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Queer Film Festival, Aphids, Theatreworks, and La Mama Theatre. His original music/sound-designs for theatre in particular are highly acclaimed and have attracted several Green Room Award nominations.

Luke has received support from the Australian Council for the Arts, the Cybec Foundation, Besen Family Foundation, IETM (international network for contemporary performing arts) and the Royaumont Foundation (France). His teachers have included Brian Ferneyhough, Liza Lim, Brett Dean, Chris Dench and David Young. Luke is currently a Masters (Research) candidate at the University of Melbourne.

Artist Julian Maher is widely exhibited both in NZ and in the USA. She gained the Masters in Fine Art with Honours from Auckland University of Technology 2007. In 2003 she as runner up in the Mazda Emerging Artist of New Zealand and for the 5 last years has worked moving between New Zealand and the United States. During this time she participated in a number of Artist in Residence programs and collaborations. Her work is exhibited in galleries both in New Zealand and in the US .

Paul uses a mixture of traditional and digital techniques to create both sound and visual compositions. His music has been reviewed and featured in music magazines throughout Europe, Australia and Japan including ‘The Wire’ magazine. He has performed as a solo artist throughout the UK (as Reverbaphon) and in collaboration (with Box, Novus) . Now living in Auckland, he is a regular participant in the improvising collective Vitamin S, the percussion ensemble ‘fritterhead’ and is a founding member of ‘Plastic Sheep’.

Celeste Oram is an Auckland-based composer, flautist, singer, actor, and director. Her compositions have been performed, recorded and nationally broadcast by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Intrepid Music Project. This year she will be creating a new work for the Song Company, a Sydney-based vocal ensemble. Celeste has a particular interest in composing for theatre: in May 2011, her chamber opera The Electrical Eclipse was premiered at the University of Auckland, and she has scored songs and incidental music for productions ranging from Euripidean tragicomedy to German-language theatre to various Shakespeare plays. In 2012 she completed a BMus(Hons)BA with first-class honours at the University of Auckland, where her recognitions included Douglas Lilburn prizes in composition and performance, and the Douglas Mews composition prize.

We are a Grade 3/4 class at an Australian International School in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Borneo. Our cultural heritage is diverse; we come from South Africa, Ireland, Indonesia, America, India, Singapore, Australia and Greece. We speak a mixture of languages and have a million unique experiences. Our classroom teacher is Miss Felicity Mitchell, and she teaches us all subjects including Choir, Art and Music. We created these visual scores at school by using textas, pencils and black markers on paper. We are excited about our debut as composers and we hope we get really famous.

Alan Lee

Alan is a policy analyst by day and musician by night with bents on the side including graphic design and sustainability.

Trained from a young age in piano and later trombone, he has worked since the mid-90s as an instrumentalist, composer and musical coach with diverse soloists and ensembles from children to adults.

His output includes a chamber opera staged at Melbourne Museum, works performed by Melbourne Symphony, Orchestra Victoria, Duo Sol, Song Company and Speak Percussion as well as film and theatre music. Most recently he staged a concert of Australian music and images in a 14th century Chinese temple as part of the Year of Australian Culture in China.

In addition to a Bachelor of Music, he holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne and an interdisciplinary Masters from ANU. Since 2010 he has been based in Beijing where he works on climate change programs. http://alandavidlee.wordpress.com

Following on from a degree in Music Composition and subsequent studies in Arts Education and Administration, Stéphanie is now the Director of Art Kabanyana.
Originally born from a desire to assist, develop and promote young emerging artists who are impeded by challenging officialdom and administration, Art Kabanyana has in time become the neurocentre for Stéphanie’s many hats: A Manager in Production, Project, Arts Administration and School Programs, to Producer, Sound Designer, Performance Artist and Composer. The company focusses on projects engaging in multicultural and community arts and development, new music, and indigenous music education. 
Recently, Stéphanie has worked with Creative Original Music Adelaide, Musica Viva Ménage, Arena Theatre Company, Next Wave, The Collingwood Underground Arts Park, Richmond Housing Estate Moon Lantern Festival, and The Substation.
Currently, Stéphanie is focussing her energy into being the School Programs Manager at Music Outback Foundation, as well as collaborating with Miranda Hill in 3 Shades Black New Music Ensemble and co-founding Melbourne’s newest community development organisation, Collaborative Cultures.
Stephanie has created a score working with Caitlyn Murphy.
Caitlyn is a recent graduate of Griffith University’s Bachelor of Multimedia, majoring in Film and TV Production. Caitlyn’s most recent projects include working with Brisbane’s Anti Poverty Week Campaign, Link Up’s touring exhibition Sustaining Connections, and Music Outback Foundation’s 2011 MOBFEST Tanami Festival. Caitlyn currently works with Link Up Queensland in the Media and Multimedia Team.

Meet the Composers – Adam Simmons

Adam SImmons

Adam is a composer and multi-instrumentalist, having been involved across many different scenes within Melbourne and beyond since 1990. In 2004, Adam received a Special Award from the Freedman Foundation. For the 2006 Melbourne Fringe Festival, a special Retrospective of Adam’s work was held – featuring over 200 musicians in 40 configurations over three weeks. Musicians Adam has worked with include: Ernest Ranglin, Nigel Kennedy, Peter Brotzmann, Odean Pope, The Mavis’s and CW Stoneking.

Current ensembles include: Adam Simmons Toy Band, Adam Simmons Quartet, Origami, New Blood, Nick Tsiavos Ensemble, BOLT Ensemble, Embers, Tania Bosak’s Beijao, Steve Purcell’s Pearly Shells, Big Fela, and Collider.

Adam is releasing the debut CD for his new project, Origami, on Oct 13 at Northcote Uniting Church.

Invited to participate in the collaborative exhibition “SMS – Szczecin/Melbourne/Szczecin” by artist and friend, Jarek Wojcik, Adam was encouraged to present something very different to his musical performances. In response to this Adam developed the idea of his music box assemblages, drawing from his musical aspirations and aesthetic sense to inform a more physical form of expression. As a visual artist, Adam has been in several group shows since Oct 2009, with his debut solo exhibition at Catherine Asquith Gallery in July 2010. Adam’s work has just been selected as a finalist for both the Hutchins Art Prize and the Deakin Small Sculpture Award.

Naima Fine

Naima Fine

Naima is a composer and an ecologist. She usually lives in the bush in NSW where she writes music and works on a turmeric and ginger farm.

Sometimes she plays flute, cello or bass in world music orchestras, activist street bands and punk rock groups. Her record collection includes Laurie Anderson, Bartok and Martika. She’s a 5th+ generation musician: her grandma Joanne Fine won a spot at the London Academy of Music alongside Joan Sutherland and Don Burrows, but she couldn’t take it up because they only allowed unmarried women to study there. Naima’s favourite instruments to write music on are old family pianos.

In 2017 Naima produced and composed for the Listening to Wom*n concert in Lismore Women’s Festival, and co-directed Orkeztar Lismoré. In 2015, she was Artist in Residence with collaborative duo Fine Fine Small Mountain in rural SW China, and was Music Director for the Women’s Circus 2010-2013. She publishes a regular local artist’s profile column in the Terania Times. Her music has been performed by 3 Shades Black, Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde, the Women’s Circus, and The Committee; in places as far flung as Beijing, Auckland and Lismore. Naima has spent most of her life shifting uncomfortably between music and ecology: she’s been playing music for >35 years, doing activism and studying rainforests for >25 years, and writing music for >20 years. These days she’s developing a creative practice that encompasses it all.
